Inkjet print on paper
The exhibition “Silent Cross-Eye” presents three toys invented to induce a “silent” cross-eye—an eye misalignment imperceptible to the observer—among children. The project draws on an ancient Mayan practice, in which cross-eyes were considered an ideal of beauty and applied to infants, contrasting with the criminologist Cesare Lombroso, who viewed cross-eyes as a trait of the “born criminal"

Mattan Gappell | Evil Eye (2023)
Perspex, blower, cloud-patterned wallpaper on wood
״Evil eye" presents a blowout whistle, a children’s toy designed to be blown in order to produce sound. An evil eye symbol is printed on the head of the whistle. The whistle is made of plastic and consists of a flexible tube attached to a transparent circular base.

Mattan Gappell | Pointing Finger (2023)
3D print, dead fly, cloud-patterned wallpaper on wood
״Pointing Finger״ simulates a toy mechanism that drives an index finger toward the operator's eye, echoing the childhood taunt of bringing a finger close to someone’s face without making contact. A fly is perched at the tip of the finger, forcing the participant into a frontal, intimate encounter with a rejected image. The machine shifts the act of taunting into one of forced contemplation, transforming the fly from a background element into the focal point of the gaze.

Mattan Gappell | The Watching Shepherd (2023)
Bighorn sheep doll, plastic rock, laser, cloud-patterned wallpaper on wood
״The Watching Shepherd״ features a plush ram marked with blue spray, simulating the way livestock is branded in the field. From the ram's eye, a red laser beam is emitted, projecting the image of a human skull onto the floor.
